Day 4

HELLO! Day 4 here in Israel! Today the class woke up early in the holy city of Jerusalem. We rushed to Robinson’s Arch where a meaningful tefillah was led by Josh, Zach, and Eitan. Using a Sephardi sefer Torah. Zach, Julia, Rachel and Jennifer once again read the Rosh Hodesh Torah readings.  We then learned about the Temple, and how and why Herod the Great decided to create such a huge structure.
We then went to the Kotel. We explored the caves underneath it and all said a prayer at the closest place to the Holy of Holies. When we came back up we all went to the Western Wall and had an opportunity to put a note in it.  We traveled into the City of David; in which we learned its history and how it was attacked from outer forces. We learned how the people of the city survived these multiple sieges. They did so by building tunnels to protect their water supply from those who were besieging them.
The class went exploring in the water tunnels. The conditions were not great, as many students would tell you. The caves were extremely claustrophobic and in some places the water came up to Josh’s waist.  However, we were able to splash our way through the freezing water and sing our way through the cramped space. But after Ben started singing it didn’t seem too bad; that is, until we had to go through an old sewage pipe.

After we dragged ourselves out of the pipe we went back to the hotel to clean up for the mall in which some of us met our friends and family.  At the mall we split into groups: everyone with a visitor went with their visitors, while the rest of us stayed with Morah Amalya and Dudu.  When we all got back together after dinner, we went back to the hotel for a good night sleep.

  1. Eitan: Teki'a!

Looks like a beautiful day. Was it the hizkiyahu tunnel that you went through?

If we don't hear from you prior to Shabbat - Good Shabbes! We will be at the people who live in the blue house, across from the yellow house, next to our green house for dinner - the usual. 5. Hey J-Man. When I wrote to you to stay well hydrated, you really took those words to heart. I'm so glad to read that the water didn't go over your head. I went through the same tunnels over twenty-five years ago. Can't wait for your call. Remember, to call our cell phones.
    Love,
    Your one and only mom.

  7. Wow! Looks like you are having an amazing time. Nice to see you are keeping up the not eating shwarma streak, Zach. Still a little jealous, and we are missing you lots, especially Ben and Rover. Have an awesome Shabbat, and we hope you make it to shul this time :) BTW - really nice job on the blog to Josh, Zach, Amalya and Rabbi Amanda! Thanks to the photographer too.
    Love you!

  8. Avi, first thing first, I see that you had a PRETZEL!
I’m sure it was very special standing at the exact place where you had your bat-mitzvah just a year ago. Grandma had a great time taking you shopping (sorry about that…). What I don’t understand is why it takes 20 minutes to buy chocolate?
Irit said that you look like you are having a blast and that it seems you don’t miss home at all. So just to be on the safe side, my name is Amir and I’m your dad.
Hugs and kisses (or XOXO – whatever will embarrass you more)

  10. Sounds like you are having some good CLEAN fun! Zach, we can't wait to hear about the changes at Ir David since December. P.S. I know you have a busy itinerary, but you should really try to squeeze in some time to daven.

  13. It looks like another great day!
It also looks like I am sympathizing with you too much. I saw you eating the Yerushalmi Bagel, and I immediately got hungry. Saw you eating the shwarmah and had to go get something to eat. And when I saw you coming out of the water tunnel wet I started to shiver. Wait for me, I'm coming!!!
Don't worry, Avi, I won't do it to you.
    Love you, Mom

    Avi (Bjorn),
Your socks are real comfortable. Also, your room now doubles as my personal hamper. You should probably clean it when you get back. We miss you a lot, but it sure looks like you're having fun.
    LOVE,
Your loving brother Yotam who loves you

  14. Dearest Jennifer - nothing like a golf cart! Yesterday we saw the movie "Next Year Jerusalem" about how the Jewish Home here in CT took 8 of its 90 year old residents to Israel a couple of years ago. I think they had as good a time as you guys are having, although they did not show them covered in whipped cream! And then we had a short Yom Hazikaron service with the emissaries. They showed a film of the sirens and I realized you were probably experiencing them at the same time. You can guess what I did. Please come home soon as I am running out of Kleenex!!
    Love,
    Mom
